I <3 Reading

by jason on April 4, 2007

I have a passion for reading. Sadly I don’t read my Bible as much as I should but I do love reading books. I got hooked on John Scalzi’s blog and I’ve never even read anything else from him. To be honest, I feel a twinge of voyeurism when I read his blog because he really puts himself out there to his fans. Scalzi really has a heart for sharing his life with those who have read his books, and his blog, and I’m lucky I came across his writings. I’m interested in actually reading his work now.

Today I also found L.E. Modesitt Jr.’s blog. Modesitt is probably one of my favorite authors of all time. I started with his Saga of Recluce books a decade ago. The Magic Engineer is my favorite book, the first of his I had ever read. After thumbing my way through it, loving every minute of it, I went and bought all of the others of the series. Most I had to order on Amazon.com because I was in the Air Force at the time and didn’t have a great bookstore handy.

After reading through the Recluce series, which is still in-progress to this day, I picked up The Forever Hero compilation novel. I couldn’t put it down and it’s probably one of the first books that really touched me deeply about the main character. Modesitt made the protagonist so believable, so human, so…imperfect, that you couldn’t help but empathize with him.

So then I picked up the Soprano Sorceress series and loved them too. I haven’t re-read them in a long time so maybe I’ll do that next. =)

I’ve never been a huge reader of Sci-Fi, but then after reading The Forever Hero for the third I started picking up more of Modesitt’s Sci-Fi books such as Flash and The Parafaith War. I’m almost finished reading The Ethos Effect and once that’s done I think I’m going to have to make a run to Borders to purchase some of the Ecolitan series.

Keep the books coming, Lee! John, don’t take it personal, I will pick up The Androids Dream soon!
