Big Deal…

So the Department of Defense has decided to block access to MySpace, YouTube and other Social Network sites. Big Frickin’ Deal. It’s about time. The Communist News Network (CNN.com) is up in arms about it. Their theory is that this takes away a soldier’s ability to talk with his or her family.

Honestly, I’m surprised that it has taken the DoD this long to block access to those sites. OPSEC, OPerational SECurity, is a key component of force protection. Blogs and YouTube videos allow too much visibility into the daily lives of soldiers in a way that the enemy, that’s right, enemy, has access and can utilize it to kill our soldiers.

Poor OPSEC hurt our military in Vietnam buy giving the enemy information that could be pieced together to determine troop strength, location and armament. Social networking sites give our enemies an abundant amount of information about our soldiers. Who is to know that a terrorist isn’t gathering data at this moment to attack the families of service members fighting overseas?

If you want to talk home use a morale call or write an email. A YouTube video of you and your buddies straddling the barrel of a tank is hardly fit for public consumption and casts the military in a negative light.

Go Air Force!
