Several months ago, I ran across WikiPad while investigating Wiki-type applications for work. I didn’t spend much time looking at it; my focus was on an enterprise Wiki solution and not a personal wiki application. My need at the time was for inter-department collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
Over the weekend I picked up Ready For Anything, a companion for Getting Things Done by David Allen. Much of Ready for Anything is based on the principles of GTD and my creativity wheels started to turn as I flipped through the pages.
A realization came over me. I didn’t have any tried and true implementations of GTD for my life. I’d worked with it in the past and had implemented it in small ways, but I didn’t ever fully commit myself. Not only that, I didn’t have any good means of tracking all of my “open loops.”
Enter WikiPad. WikiPad is a standalone personal wiki. Once I started to apply myself to the interface and “WikiWords” I was off and running. WikiPad works just like you’d expect of a wiki. When you use CamelCase (or PascalCase) an “article” is automatically created. You can think click on the article and edit to your hearts content.
To create a new wiki page there are two ways. You can use CamelCase or click the “Wikize Selected Word” button. The “Wikize” button is great if you opt to use a phrase and not CamelCase.
On my main page I typed:
MyProjects
This automatically created a child document called “MyProjects.” I could just have easily entered:
My Projects and then clicked the “Wikize Selected Word” button to convert it to a Wikiword.
A third option:
[My Projects]
This third entry automatically created a Wikized word and child document without any extra clicks. Quite amazing.
For someone looking for a free and excellent Personal Information Management application to track their lists, todos, projects, tasks and other information I recommend trying out WikiPad. I’ll write more once I’ve gotten more use of the application and some more advanced tricks under my belt.
