My Beowulf Review

by jason on November 21, 2007

Beowulf, a take on the epic poem penned in the early sixth century (or thereabouts), is a popcorn munching flick. State-of-the-art CGI is used throughout the entire movie; there’s no live cinematography.

The movie is good and the plot is pretty simplistic. Seriously, it doesn’t have to be convoluted and Beowulf keeps everything on target. I think they could have fleshed out some of the characters a bit more, but overall it makes little difference. Beowulf takes on Grendel, then he tries to slap around Grendel’s momma, and then there’s the battle royale with a dragon.

The characters in the movie are modeled after famous actors and actresses who also lend their voice for the film. Angelina Jolie is cast as Grendel’s mother and, quite frankly, you will learn what she looks like naked. Brad Pitt is a lucky, lucky man.

Graphics are great, the musical score is superb, and at the end you really start to feel for Beowulf and Company. The voice acting is very well done and the actors definitely help lend a touch of depth to the characters through their powerful dialog.

I’d give it a 7 out of 10. Go see it.
