My Spring San Antonio Trip

Saturday marked my first plane ride to San Antonio since October 15th, 1996. Wonder how I got that date? It’s the day I flew to US Air Force Basic Training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. It’s something you never forget.

I woke up at 6:00 AM on Saturday to wake up Emma and get us ready for our 8:00 AM flight. I felt horrible, fevered and exhausted. I popped some Advil in the morning and off we went to the airport.

The flights were good and Emma was bummed because we had to sit in the very back of the plane for both of our flights. She loves to look out the window and see everything below the plane. The big plus for her was that I had loaded The Incredibles on my iPod Touch for her. She made it through fifteen minutes before she took a nap for the rest of the first flight.

We arrived in San Antonio right after noon. Her mom picked her up and I managed to make it to my hotel. Unfortunately for me, in my fevered and delirious state, my room wouldn’t be ready for another two hours. The Marriott I was in blessedly had wireless in the lobby so I crashed on one of the chairs and surfed, trying to ignore my sore throat and throbbing head.

The duty manager was able to get my room cleaned early so I was in it before 2:00 PM. I bought some snacks at the front desk; a bottle of water and Trail Mix. I then spent the next six hours curled up in bed, taking more Advil, and watching HBO. Swallowing Trail Mix or even water felt like I was eating shards of glass.

I caught the HBO movie John Adams parts 1 and 2 and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys history. Paul Giamitti plays the title role and he’s excellent. His oratory is spectacular and his acting really drew me into the life of Adams and the trials and tribulations of the colonials.

Barely coherent I crashed around 8:00 PM or so. I had a 6:00 AM flight home on Sunday so I was hoping I’d feel better in the morning.

No such luck.

I grabbed some Dayquil and chased it with Advil on checkout from the hotel at 5:00 AM. It really seemed to do the job for most of Sunday. I made it home by 11:00 AM and then took a nap from 1:00 PM until almost 6:00PM! I was exhausted.

Life sucks, I woke up Monday, today, feeling like I did on Saturday. I was able to get into the doctor and get tested for strep throat since I had a fever just over 102. Looks like I have a nasty sinus infection. No strep, which is some good news. Haven’t had strep since my tonsils were removed when I was ten years old.

So I’m sick, exhausted, stressed out, and I miss my Emma T!
