Such a glorious day deserved a bike ride. It was great out, sunny, warm with a slight breeze. The weather in Omaha has been so crappy lately that I looked forward to today so I could take my bike out.

It was a good ride and I covered 10 miles round trip on the Big Papio Trail, one of the main recreational bike paths through Omaha. There were plenty of people out enjoying the good weather and we traded many smiles and waves as we passed each other.

I checked the bike out before the ride since it was in the garage all winter. Everything was in great condition, good tire pressure, brakes responsive, etc.

I will admit that I hate taking my bike on the streets here. The path started about half a mile from my apartment and part of that I had to cover on the street. I don’t like to dodge cars for my life and not all of the way had sidewalk to use. As you can see I survived!

The weather tomorrow is supposed to be great but I don’t know if I’ll have enough time before my dance lesson at 6:45. If I’m lucky I’ll be able to squeeze a ride or two in during the week! My gym is about a mile and a half away so I may just bike to it as well. I can’t wait for the next ride!

I’m halfway through my current dance “program” and I think I’m going to start working on more advanced dances and move to a more advanced program. It’s much more expensive but I really love getting out and dancing.

Why? I don’t think about all of the other crap in life. I get to dance, break a sweat, laugh with my friends and have a good time. It’s relaxing to go dance and just DANCE. No fear, no embarrassment, just plain fun.

Looks like I’ve got a lesson on Saturday…a more advanced one. I admit that I get a bit frustrated at times but just like anything new; you don’t start off perfect.

I’ve been itching to get back into bike riding, so last week, after a year of talking about it, I went and picked up a new Trek 7000 urban/hybrid bike at The Bike Rack here in Omaha.

When I was growing up in the backwoods of Missouri, one of my chief enjoyments was my daily bike ride up to the mailbox. It was a two mile round trip experience that took me across fen and field on the dirt road that led to our house. It was a good break from the daily routine of feeding the horses, taking care of the animals and generally doing nothing for most of my summers. That’s the price you pay when you live three miles from the paved roads and 15 miles from any town of consequence. Trust me, the word “podunk” doesn’t describe the situation.

Anyways, I digress. It was wonderful to take off for a half-hour bike ride when I was a kid and it’s even more enjoyable now. Omaha has approximately 90 miles of bicycle trails that run through the city. This morning after I got up I drove down to near the trail head of the Keystone Trail in Northwest Omaha and pedaled down to 72nd Street and Grover. It was around six miles each way and the weather was perfect. Right around 75 degrees without a cloud in the sky. The trail wasn’t very busy (I’ve walked parts of it several times). There were plenty of other riders as well as a few women brave enough to roller-blade.

All-in-all it was a good ride. I think tomorrow afternoon I’m going to bike a few miles of the Big Papio Trail. I haven’t been on it yet. Let’s hope the weather holds up!

Pulled out the ole’ gym equipment from the garage and setup a makeshift, no frills, hot iron-pumpin’ buffet. I’ve got two weight benches that do incline and decline, as well as one is made for doing the bench-presses. I’ve probably got about 150 lbs in barbell weight and another 50 in dumb bells.

I decided that I’d start off with some Romanian Deadlifts, followed up with some Bent-Over barbell rows. I was really hammering on my quads (thighs) and didn’t realize it. I loaded up 120 lbs on the barbell, raised it overhead and proceeded to do some squats, which almost killed me. I did two sets and then decided I would switch off to some ‘easier’ lunges. Wrong! After a single set I could barely stand.

A few minutes ago I was walking Emma back up to her room before bed and I could barely get my legs to straighten. Tomorrow is going to be a bit painful!
